Hungarian schools dump MS Office.

Hungary's public administrations will by default use open document standards for their electronic documents, as of April this year, the government ministers agreed on 23 December, and all public organisations are encouraged to move to open source office tools. Hungary's government also in December decided to cancel the funding of proprietary office suite licences for all schools.

Open Course Library makes textbooks almost free.

The Open Course Library is a collection of expertly-developed educational materials – including textbooks, syllabi, course activities, readings, and assessments – for 81 high-enrolling college courses. 42 courses have been completed so far, providing faculty with a high-quality option that will cost students no more than $30 per course.

Our goals:
  1. Lower textbook costs for students
  2. Improve course completion rates
  3. Provide new resources for faculty

MIT today announced the launch of an online learning initiative internally called “MITx.” MITx will offer a portfolio of MIT courses through an online interactive learning platform that will:
  • organize and present course material to enable students to learn at their own pace
  • feature interactivity, online laboratories and student-to-student communication
  • allow for the individual assessment of any student’s work and allow students who demonstrate their mastery of subjects to earn a certificate of completion awarded by MITx
  • operate on an open-source, scalable software infrastructure in order to make it continuously improving and readily available to other educational institutions.

Democratizing Education: MIT's Open Course Revolution Turns 10.

Ten years ago this month the Massachusetts Institute of Technology made the radical decision to post almost all the educational materials used in its classes on the web, and they made them free to anyone with an internet connection. Since then, MIT OpenCourseWare has shared more than 2,000 courses with an estimated 100 million people around the globe. More importantly, they've made a profound impact on the democratization of education.
